Getting around on the island of Cozumel is
easy!
Downtown Cozumel is a grid of one way streets going east and west alternately.
Once you know the system, getting around the island is a breeze. Ave
Rafael Megar runs north to south and will get you from the north hotel
zone all the way south to Chankanaab Park and Punta Celarain. The Trans
Island Road will take you from the modern west side of the island to
Cozumel's wild east side of the island. Click

are a few tips for getting around:
|
service is readily
available at just about any place on the island, but especially in downtown
San Miguel and at all of the hotels. The fares are very reasonable,
but we do recommend asking the driver the cost of getting to your destination,
before entering the taxi. Many of the drivers speak a little English
and all of them are very friendly. As with many of the native Cozumelenos,
you'll make the driver's day by speaking to him in his native language,
Spanish. Instead of asking, "How much to the plaza?" ask,
"Cuanto es a la plaza?" or "Cual es la tarifa a la plaza?"
Your hotel's concierge keeps a current list of average
taxi rates to various locations on the island.
· Keep small bills handy for paying
the fare
· Always make sure you have all of your
belongings before exiting the taxi
· Some taxi drivers already include
the tip in their fare, so it's a good
idea to check the rates with your hotel concierge
so you don't
double-tip the driver. |

Rental Cars
Apart from the reliable taxi service in Cozumel, there are many car
rental agencies called RENTADORAS. In addition to Budget and Avis, there
are plenty of reputable local companies.
Here's a little list of tips and things to know when
renting:
· Make sure the rate you are quoted includes all the extras like
insurance, taxes, and credit card fees
· All agencies will require you to present a valid driver's license
and a credit card when you pick up the vehicle
· The agency will leave your credit card open as a voucher until
the car's return
· If you do not understand something you are asked to sign, ask
for an explanation before signing it
· Make sure the lights, turn signals and seat belts are all functional
· Note & point out, to the agent, any dents or scratches
on the
vehicle before accepting it
· Ask for your credit card voucher and a paid receipt when you
are paid in full

Moped Rental
Moped rental is also available from many of the rental shops. Be
warned! Moped accidents are the most common vehicle accidents on
the island, among tourists and residents, and usually involve cars!
Be extremely cautious and always wear a helmet. We highly recommend
renting a car or taking a taxi instead. |
